Alder (Alnus Cordata / Glutinosa)A tough and easy to grow hedge. Fantastic windbreak for any exposed garden; Alders are frequently used by orchard growers given their effectiveness at slowing the wind down. Bold green leaves and nice catkins. This is a native hedging plant and grows well in our climate. Key features: Fast growing; Native variety of hedging; Grows in all conditions; Wildlife friendly; Excellent windbreak; Space plants 60cm apart; Height 175cm up to your chosen height; Trim once a year at the end of summer; and one of the most commonly used hedging plants.

Beech (Fagus Sylvatica)

Beech (Fagus Sylvatica)An excellent hedging plant that has a rich copper autumn colour. The leaves are tolerant to pollution. Best suited to well-drained soil. This is a native hedging plant and grows well in our climate. Key features: Easy to shape; Easy to grow; Native variety of hedging; Wildlife friendly; Keeps its autumn brown leaves until deep into the winter; Space plants 30-45 cm apart; Height 100cm up to your chosen height; Trim once a year at the end of summer; and one of the most commonly used hedging plants.

Blackthorn (Prunus Spinosa)

Blackthorn (Prunus Spinosa)Dark, very spiny branches. Small white flowers in March or early April. Fruits like small damsons, blue at first and then shining black. Used for flavouring gin. Good security hedge. Recommended growing distance between plants is 30cm.

Box (Buxus Sempervirens)

Box (Buxus Sempervirens)A very versatile hedging plant. It can be kept as a low as 30 cm for use as a low hedge or edging plant. It can also be left to slowly grow to 2 metres or the height of your choice. It is easy to grow and will grow in most soils, particularly well-drained soils. The plants grow in partially shady or sunny conditions. Key features: Great low hedge; Easy to shape; Good for topiary; Evergreen; Suitable for coastal areas; Great as an edging shrub for flower beds and paths; Can grow in shade / sun / semi-shade; and very dense foliage.

Cotoneaster Franchettii

Cotoneaster FranchettiiIn a Country Hedge Mix, or on its own, makes a green and full informal hedge. Recommended growing distance between plants is 30cm.

Cotoneaster Simonsii

Cotoneaster SimonsiiIn a Country Hedge Mix, or on its own, makes an upright semi-evergreen hedge with scarlet berries. Recommended growing distance between plants is 30cm.

Country Mixed Hedging

Country Mixed HedgingThis is a mixed, native hedge which is often seen in rural areas or along country lanes. A good country hedge provides a wonderfully secure barrier and is excellent at supporting wildlife. Your Country Mixed Hedging will be made up of 50% Hawthorn as this serves as the backbone of a country hedge. In addition to Hawthorn, your Country Mixed Hedging will be provided with a mixture of the following: Field Maple; Hornbeam; Dogwood; Hazel; Spindle; and Blackthorn. Key features: Autumn colour; Native hedging; Wildlife friendly; Serves as a secure barrier; Space plants 30 to 45 cm apart; Height 120 cm up to your chosen height; Easy to grow; and trim once a year at the end of summer.

Elder (Sambucus Nigra)Scented flowers with a fruit for wine making. Recommended growing distance between plants is 30cm.

Field Maple (Acer Campestre)

Field Maple (Acer Campestre)A picturesque plant frequently used in rustic Country Hedges. Foliage turns clear yellow. Flushed red in the Autumn. Recommended growing distance between plants is 30cm.

Green Privet (Ligustrum Ovalifolium)

Green Privet (Ligustrum Ovalifolium)Easy to grow and therefore a popular choice. Makes a good neat hedge. Evergreen except for in very severe winters. This is a native hedging plant and grows well in our climate. Key features: Good for all conditions; Good coastal plant; Easy to shape; Space plants 30 to 45cm apart; Height 120 to 400 cm; Trim once a year at the end of summer; and one of the most commonly used hedging plants.

Guelder Rose (Viburnum Opulus)Good Country Hedge plant, with red translucent berries. Recommended growing distance between plants is 45cm.

Hawthorn (Crataeagus Monogyna)

Hawthorn (Crataeagus Monogyna)Extensively planted as a hedge in this country. White fragrant flowers laden with red fruits in the Autumn. Prickly - makes a good security hedge. Recommended growing distance between plants is 30cm.

Hazel Nut Plant (Corylus Avellana)

Hazel Nut Plant (Corylus Avellana)Useful as a tall screening shrub. Leaves yellow in the Autumn. Impressive long yellow lamb tails in February. Country Hedge. Recommended growing distance between plants is 30cm.

Hornbeam (Carpinus Betulus)

Hornbeam (Carpinus Betulus)A very good hedging plant. Grows in most soils and will tolerate wet areas. Trims well to make a neat and formal hedge. Key features: Native variety of hedging; Suits windy sites; Suits most soil types; Suitable for wet areas; Tolerates shade; Space plants 45cm apart; Height 100cm up to your chosen height; and trim once a year at the end of summer.
